UPDATED DECEMBER 2016

FORMER BADMINTON EBBISHAM JUNIOR RETURNS AS BRONZE MEDAL OLYMPIAN

On the evening of Thursday 22nd December, badminton bronze medal Rio Olympian, and former junior of Ebbisham, Chris Langridge returned to Ebbisham Sports Club, alongside Yonex and Badminton England.

Chris was a former junior here at Ebbisham Sports Club, a prodigy of Alan and Jackie Cunningham (who have coached juniors at Ebbisham for the past 40 years).  He has gone on to achieve an incredible career as a professional badminton player and won a bronze medal alongside his partner, Marcus Ellis at the Rio 2016 Olympic games.

Unfortunately, the day before, Chris injured his hamstring so he was unable to do the planned exhibition matches.  However, he still went on court with groups of adults and juniors in turn and gave them expert coaching advice, as well as treating everyone to a very interesting Q&A session afterwards, particularly following the devastating news that Olympic funding was being withdrawn for badminton.

Chris then presented with a beautiful bunch of flowers from the Club to Jackie and Alan Cunningham, in recognition of their 40 years coaching with the Club and inspiring hundreds of youngsters, like Chris, on to greater things or just to enjoy their badminton throughout their lives.

Clare Hunt, Badminton Chairman, then presented Chris with an Honorary Life Ebbisham Membership Certificate, in the hope that he might return to the Club one day in the future – and as he was leaving, Chris promised to come back sometime so watch this space!

Thanks to the generosity of the 100+ people who came along to this big open evening event, we managed to raise £81 towards this year’s local Club’s charity, Love Me Love My Mind.

EBBISHAM IS ‘SURREY SPORTS CLUB OF THE YEAR 2016’!

Fantastic news!  Ebbisham was presented on 3rd December 2016 with the Active Surrey ‘Surrey Sports Club of the Year 2016’ award at the HG Wells Conference Centre in Woking.

We had been one of three Clubs shortlisted out of the 11 Surrey Borough winners and then won the overall Surrey award on the night so it was a tremendous achievement, particularly as we also won it back in 2009.  For other category winners, see http://surreysportsawards.activesurrey.com/sports-awards-results/surrey-sports-award-winners .

The trophy is in the Office window if you’d like to see it as you go past and see here for photo or presentation on the night.

Our thanks for this achievement go to:-

·         the Chairman, Colin Shermer, for his vision, commitment and drive to enhance the Club experience for all the Members

·         to the members of the Management and Section Committees for their ideas and input

·         to the friendly and professional Coaches for their patience and enthusiasm

·         to the numerous volunteers without whom the Club would not exist

·         to the Members and Non-Members who use our facilities

·         to the continual support of local and national organisations such as the Epsom & Ewell Borough Council Leisure Department, County sports partnerships, sports associations and other service providers

·         and, of course, to the dedicated staff who keep the wheels turning and on the right track!

TICKETS SOLD OUT FOR OUR EBBISHAM XMAS PARTY!

Over 70 Members, friends and family plus the ‘better-than-ever’ Mike Rowles’ live band ‘Expanding Waist Band’ squeezed into our Bar/Lounge area on Saturday, 3rd December for the biggest Club social of the year – our Ebbisham Xmas Party.  Some people brought in festive nibbles, or Chinese, Indian, pizza, fish & chips takeaways before the music and dancing started.

In the first break, we sold over £200 of Xmas Raffle tickets in aid of our club charity, Love Me Love My Mind, which made a grand total of £468 raffle ticket sales over a 2 week period – everyone was so generous!

The 1st prize Luxury M&S Food Hamper was won by the Chairman of the Surrey Squash and Racketball Association, Patrick Fleming who only happened to be in the Club the day before for a meeting – so worth coming along then, Patrick!

Most people stayed until midnight as they were enjoying themselves so much.  Thanks to the wonderful Band, to Trevor and Connor behind the Bar, to Colin as compere and Freya Taylor for randomly drawing her Dad’s raffle tickets 3 times out of 2,340 tickets to choose from!

EBBISHAM TENNIS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016

FINALS REPORT

The day opened with the men's singles - Here former winner Jake Bonner  put up a strong fight to regain the title he lost to Chris Graham last year, against the in-form Peter Willis (who incidentally is the reigning squash singles champion), before losing in 2 sets. The ladies singles pitted two former champions against one another -  this promised a close contest but in the end Evelynn Ansell was no match for worthy winner Jo Robinson. Next up, the men's doubles - this produced an exciting see-saw contest with Peter Willis and Colin Shermer racing to a 5-2 lead, only for a freshly invigorated Jake Bonner and Rob Crouch to raise their game and storm past to take the set and go on to win the second too. The ladies doubles saw two new partnerships battle it out, with Gill Futcher and Justine Gonshaw emerging victorious over Evelynn Ansell and Kate Tasch. In the mixed doubles former winners Lesley Coles and Jason Moss had to settle for second place against the male half of last year's winners Colin Shermer and new partner Jo Robinson. Last to be played was the men's singles plate - having suffered a surprise first round exit from the main draw, it was probably no surprise that number 2 seed Leo Morrell came out on top, but not before his opponent Nick Peers had put up a spirited fight.

All together a fine day, both weather and tennis wise, for players and spectators. Thanks to the kind souls who stood and umpired in the sun and to those who provided refreshments - we raised £45 for the club charity Love me Love my Mind. The day was rounded off in splendid fashion with a curry and dancing (though it was too hot for much of that) to Jeff 'Double Decks' disco.

For complete results and photos of the event, see here and here .

SURREY YOUTH GAMES PRESENTATION EVENING

The Surrey Youth Games Presentation Evening took place on 13th July 2016 and all the Squad children were presented with Certificates and winning medals.  Well done to the children and their Coaches!  Epsom & Ewell Borough came 2nd this year in the Borough Trophy and Ebbisham Sports Club was awarded the Charlie Steer Trophy for being the Most Supportive Club – providing free courts and free coaching, plus free two months Membership to all those who were Squad Members.  See photos here.

UPDATED JUNE 2016

SURREY YOUTH GAMES SUCCESSES!

What a fantastic weekend of sporting activity it was at the Surrey Youth Games at Surrey Sports Park!  The following Ebbisham-based teams did brilliantly with a major haul of medals which is testament to the talent of both the children and their professional Coaches!

TOUCHTENNIS Anniversary Tournament

To celebrate 2 years of touchtennis at Ebbisham (we were the first club in Surrey to take it up) we are holding an official ranking tournament here on the badminton courts on Saturday 2 January. To find out more and to enter follow link http://www.touchtennis.com/gb/10000-ebbisham-challenger-event-3687.php Better hurry, the event is limited to 24 players – 1st come 1st served!

PC FUN AND GAMES FOR HALLOWEEN + parent/player seminar

The Friday before half term all Performance Centre players were invited to come together for an evening of fun games led by Coach Steve Jacobs – fancy dress was optional, but most entered into the spirit of Halloween with some scary outfits.

With all the players suitably exhausted, they and their parents partook of a splendid bring-and-share buffet. This was followed by the parent/player seminar, with presentations from coaches, older players and experienced badminton mums, covering training regimes, diet and competitions. The highlight of the evening was a talk by 21 year-old Epsom born Georgina Bland. She has recently achieved success on the senior circuit and is a member of the Surrey Smashers team in the National Badminton League. Georgina gave a fascinating insight into her move from junior to senior level and our players were all ears to get hints on what they need to do to emulate her achievements. RACKETBALL

·         Club Championships – With several players involved in more than one match, the finals were spread over 2 evenings; Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd October. It appears that if your moniker is Chris you have more chance of reaching a final (though of course skill rather than your name may have something to do with it), with Chris Blackman beating Chris Little in the open final, Chris Little defeating Chris Graham in the handicap final and Chris Graham alongside Rob Crouch (you may have to change your name Rob) winning the doubles. For full results click here and for photos here.

·         New racketball class - If you are retired or semi-retired why not come down and give racketball a try!  The club is hosting a 6 week course on Tuesdays from 10th November to 15th December. The sessions take place from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. The cost is £18 (£3 per session). For more information or to book your place call the office 01372 720647.

UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2015

Welcome to the 2015/16 season. What have we in store to tempt you in?

BADMINTON

·         Congratulations to our Surrey Ladies 1 and Men’s 3 teams and Sutton Hybrid B and Mixed C teams who all won their divisions last season. Especial mention should go to Ladies 1 who, boosted by the presence of some of our talented Performance Centre players, have gained promotion back to division 1 after an absence of several years. Good luck to all of them and the rest of our teams.

·         New members are welcome in all our sections and what better time to start than the beginning of a new season. Adults - Come along to one of our club nights (A section Wednesdays, B section Thursdays or C section Tuesdays) for a free trial. Juniors – Open session for prospective members of all standards will be held on Sunday 6 September at 10.00am. If you can’t make that session, call the office 01372 720647 to arrange a visit.

·         Junior coaching Sessions restart on Saturday 12 September. Prospective members are invited to come along to the first session at 1pm. Following their popularity when they were introduced in July, we are again offering additional after-school sessions – contact club for details.

RACKETBALL

·         What is racketball? –this fast growing sport, now well established at Ebbisham with its own leagues, teams and club nights, is played on a squash court with short rackets and larger bouncier balls. If you haven’t experienced it, but would like to give it a go, we can find someone to introduce you to the delights of racketball.

·         Club championships The annual competition is now underway with finals day scheduled for Saturday 3 October.

Our own world top ten ranked player Rob Crouch and event organiser Hugh Impey were joined by players from all over the country in this ranking event. Our well-stocked bar provides somewhere pleasant to relax after a game and we have recently added BT Sport to supplement our Sky Sports programmes.
