There is plenty going on at Ebbisham for everyone of all ages and abilities, Members and Non-Members, including some new activities like Get Active 50+ Rackets Mornings, Pilates and Tai Chi.  See some of the activities here .

On the evening of Thursday 22nd December, badminton bronze medal Rio Olympian, and former junior of Ebbisham, Chris Langridge returned to Ebbisham Sports Club, alongside Yonex and Badminton England.

Chris was a former junior here at Ebbisham Sports Club, a prodigy of Alan and Jackie Cunningham (who have coached juniors at Ebbisham for the past 40 years).  He has gone on to achieve an incredible career as a professional badminton player and won a bronze medal alongside his partner, Marcus Ellis at the Rio 2016 Olympic games.

Unfortunately, the day before, Chris injured his hamstring so he was unable to do the planned exhibition matches.  However, he still went on court with groups of adults and juniors in turn and gave them expert coaching advice, as well as treating everyone to a very interesting Q&A session afterwards, particularly following the devastating news that Olympic funding was being withdrawn for badminton.

Chris then presented with a beautiful bunch of flowers from the Club to Jackie and Alan Cunningham, in recognition of their 40 years coaching with the Club and inspiring hundreds of youngsters, like Chris, on to greater things or just to enjoy their badminton throughout their lives.

Clare Hunt, Badminton Chairman, then presented Chris with an Honorary Life Ebbisham Membership Certificate, in the hope that he might return to the Club one day in the future – and as he was leaving, Chris promised to come back sometime so watch this space!

Thanks to the generosity of the 100+ people who came along to this big open evening event, we managed to raise £81 towards this year’s local Club’s charity, Love Me Love My Mind.

Fantastic news!  Ebbisham was presented on 3rd December 2016 with the Active Surrey ‘Surrey Sports Club of the Year 2016’ award at the HG Wells Conference Centre in Woking.

We had been one of three Clubs shortlisted out of the 11 Surrey Borough winners and then won the overall Surrey award on the night so it was a tremendous achievement, particularly as we also won it back in 2009.  For other category winners, see http://surreysportsawards.activesurrey.com/sports-awards-results/surrey-sports-award-winners .

The trophy is in the Office window if you’d like to see it as you go past and see here for photo or presentation on the night.

Our thanks for this achievement go to:-

·         the Chairman, Colin Shermer, for his vision, commitment and drive to enhance the Club experience for all the Members

·         to the members of the Management and Section Committees for their ideas and input

·         to the friendly and professional Coaches for their patience and enthusiasm

·         to the numerous volunteers without whom the Club would not exist

·         to the Members and Non-Members who use our facilities

·         to the continual support of local and national organisations such as the Epsom & Ewell Borough Council Leisure Department, County sports partnerships, sports associations and other service providers

·         and, of course, to the dedicated staff who keep the wheels turning and on the right track!

Over 70 Members, friends and family plus the ‘better-than-ever’ Mike Rowles’ live band ‘Expanding Waist Band’ squeezed into our Bar/Lounge area on Saturday, 3rd December for the biggest Club social of the year – our Ebbisham Xmas Party.  Some people brought in festive nibbles, or Chinese, Indian, pizza, fish & chips takeaways before the music and dancing started.

In the first break, we sold over £200 of Xmas Raffle tickets in aid of our club charity, Love Me Love My Mind, which made a grand total of £468 raffle ticket sales over a 2 week period – everyone was so generous!

The 1st prize Luxury M&S Food Hamper was won by the Chairman of the Surrey Squash and Racketball Association, Patrick Fleming who only happened to be in the Club the day before for a meeting – so worth coming along then, Patrick!

Most people stayed until midnight as they were enjoying themselves so much.  Thanks to the wonderful Band, to Trevor and Connor behind the Bar, to Colin as compere and Freya Taylor for randomly drawing her Dad’s raffle tickets 3 times out of 2,340 tickets to choose from!

See photos here .

CURRY COOK-OFF, 19th November 2016

Yummy! 3 of our Members provided 30 hungry Members and friends with 3 different home-made curries – Colin Shermer (our Chairman), served up his tasty Easy Chicken Curry, Steve Chesters, (our Social Chairman and Cook-Off winner) made a delicate Malaysian Kapitan Curry and Dale Carroll (a new Squash Member and ex-Chef) provided a chilli-laden spicy Lamb Rogan Josh.

Haweli, the Indian restaurant round the corner, supplied pilau rice, naan bread and poppadoms for all.  Most people went up for second servings and the meal was finished off with After-Eight mints!  All for a mere fiver per person – what a bargain!

After a fantastic spread, it was ‘games’ time in aid of our Club Charity, Love Me Love My Mind, with Colin Shermer providing entertainment in the form of the 4,3,2,1 game, Heads & Tails and Play your Cards Right.  What a great evening for a worthy cause!  See photos here.

Yet more good news!  Ebbisham has been shortlisted for the Surrey Sports Awards ‘Sports Club of the Year’, to be decided on Tuesday, 6th December at the HG Wells Conference Centre in Woking.  We won this award once before, in 2009, but to win it twice would be amazing!  But, even if we don’t win, we have done well to get this far..... will keep you all posted.

What a fantastic achievement!  Ebbisham was awarded ‘Sports Club of the Year’ at Epsom & Ewell’s Sports Awards ceremony on 4th October at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

Congratulations to all the Coaches, Committees, Volunteers, Members and Staff who deserve recognition and thanks for their contribution to the Club’s success and growth – see photo of the evening’s presentation here .    Left to right, Damian Smith (Squash Committee), Colin Shermer (Club Chairman), Jo Robinson (Club Development & Recruitment Co-ordinator), Alan Lamond (Trustee) and Neil Maxwell (Aon Hewitt Partner, local sponsor of this category award).

All category winners now go through to be assessed and possibly short-listed for the Surrey Sports Awards ceremony in December so we will keep you posted!

This year, entries were up 40% - 42 entrants played in 6 competitions.  Matches were played during September, culminating in a hard-fought Finals Night on Saturday, 8th October with presentations and free buffet afterwards.  Thanks to Dave Riches and other Committee Members for organising it so well.  Winners and runners-up here and photos here .

We have lots of different activities going on for adults and juniors over the Autumn Term – see here.

In partnership with the YMCA Redhill and Epsom and Ewell Borough Council’s Leisure Department, Ebbisham are holding new Boccia (seated bowls) sessions on Thursdays term-time from 1.30-3.00pm from 15th September to 8th December 2016.  Boccia is a Paralympics sport and is for anyone with a disability, mental health isues and life-threatening conditions.  Katie Gatt, Boccia Coach from YMCA, will be on hand to show everyone how this fun game is played.  First session is free, £3 thereafter and carers are free of charge.  To book, contact Jo in the Office at admin@ebbisham.com or call 01372-720647.  See GB Boccia’s website for info/videos:  http://gb-boccia.org

Ebbisham Sports Club has been shortlisted for the Aon Hewitt ‘Sports Club of the Year’ as part of the Epsom and Ewell Sports Awards.  There will be an Awards ceremony on Tuesday, 4th October at Epsom Downs Racecourse and winners of each category then go through to the Surrey Sports Awards.  Keep your fingers crossed for us!

To celebrate Team GB's amazing success  at the Olympics and hopefully at the Paralympics to come, Ebbisham held an 'I Am Team GB' free OPEN DAY on SATURDAY, 27TH AUGUST from 10am-6pm for Members, friends, family teenagers and visitors of all ages and abilities. Free taster sessions, Dodgeball, Club Tennis and Squash sessions, badminton/squash/racketball/tennis/touchtennis/tabletennis courts were available to book completely  free of charge.  There was a scrummy Brunch Menu available too.  We had 200-250 people turn up, despite the fact that it was Bank Holiday weekend and fantastic weather!  See here for photos of the day.

Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis won a fantastic Badminton Bronze medal at the recent Rio Olympics – Chris was interviewed by Clare Balding on BBC1 shortly afterwards and he said he started off his Olympic journey as a 10 year old junior and paid tribute to his former Coaches, Alan and Jackie Cunningham – who are still coaching juniors at Ebbisham and have done for the past 40 years!  Magnificent achievements all round!  For more info, see here .

Two of our Performance Centre Badminton Juniors, Leon and Luke Griffiths took part in the World Team Racketlon Championships in Denmark recently and won gold, silver and bronze medals between them!  Well done boys!  See here for photo.

Our 39 Try-Sport kids have gone home happy, have learnt new racket skills (Badminton, Squash, Racketball, Tennis, Touchtennis, table tennis) and will hopefully keep up new friendships through our 'Buddy group'. Thanks to our wonderful professional Coaches, Peter, Hugh and Steve, who joined in all the sporting and social activities and really made it fun for the kids!  We will definitely be doing this new initiative again, at Christmas/New Year 2016/17 and Easter and Summer 2017 so contact the Office if you might be interested in going on an ‘interested’ list!

Ebbisham's fifth annual Racketlon (Table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis) took place on Saturday 23rd July - 24 adults and youngsters took part in 2 grades. Leon Griffiths (16 yrs) won the A Grade, with his 12 year old brother, Luke runner-up. They then went off to Denmark to represent GB in the World Team and Doubles Racketlon Champs and came back with a haul of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals between them! The B Grade was also won by another talented 12 year old, Elliot Roberts, beating several adults to the title.  See photos here .

The day opened with the men's singles - Here former winner Jake Bonner  put up a strong fight to regain the title he lost to Chris Graham last year, against the in-form Peter Willis (who incidentally is the reigning squash singles champion), before losing in 2 sets. The ladies singles pitted two former champions against one another -  this promised a close contest but in the end Evelynn Ansell was no match for worthy winner Jo Robinson. Next up, the men's doubles - this produced an exciting see-saw contest with Peter Willis and Colin Shermer racing to a 5-2 lead, only for a freshly invigorated Jake Bonner and Rob Crouch to raise their game and storm past to take the set and go on to win the second too. The ladies doubles saw two new partnerships battle it out, with Gill Futcher and Justine Gonshaw emerging victorious over Evelynn Ansell and Kate Tasch. In the mixed doubles former winners Lesley Coles and Jason Moss had to settle for second place against the male half of last year's winners Colin Shermer and new partner Jo Robinson. Last to be played was the men's singles plate - having suffered a surprise first round exit from the main draw, it was probably no surprise that number 2 seed Leo Morrell came out on top, but not before his opponent Nick Peers had put up a spirited fight.

All together a fine day, both weather and tennis wise, for players and spectators. Thanks to the kind souls who stood and umpired in the sun and to those who provided refreshments - we raised £45 for the club charity Love me Love my Mind. The day was rounded off in splendid fashion with a curry and dancing (though it was too hot for much of that) to Jeff 'Double Decks' disco.

For complete results and photos of the event, see here and here .

The Surrey Youth Games Presentation Evening took place on 13th July 2016 and all the Squad children were presented with Certificates and winning medals.  Well done to the children and their Coaches!  Epsom & Ewell Borough came 2nd this year in the Borough Trophy and Ebbisham Sports Club was awarded the Charlie Steer Trophy for being the Most Supportive Club – providing free courts and free coaching, plus free two months Membership to all those who were Squad Members.  See photos here.

What a fantastic weekend of sporting activity it was at the Surrey Youth Games at Surrey Sports Park!  The following Ebbisham-based teams did brilliantly with a major haul of medals which is testament to the talent of both the children and their professional Coaches!

Badminton Mixed, 11-14 yrs – Silver Medals (2nd place)
Badminton Mixed, 9-11 yrs – Bronze Medals (3rd place)
Squash Juniors, 7-10 yrs – Silver Medals (2nd place)
Squash Seniors, 10-13 yrs – Silver Medals (2nd place)
Tennis Mixed, 7-8 yrs – 8th place
TouchTennis – Silver medals (2nd place)

And more good news – Epsom and Ewell came Runner-up in the league of Boroughs in Surrey this year (they came 1st last year so they did very well to follow that achievement).

Thanks to all the parents who brought along their children to Surrey Youth Games training, even if they weren’t picked for the actual Squads.  Hope they enjoyed themselves and, if they continue, they might do even better next year!

PC FUN AND GAMES FOR HALLOWEEN + parent/player seminar

The Friday before half term all Performance Centre players were invited to come together for an evening of fun games led by Coach Steve Jacobs – fancy dress was optional, but most entered into the spirit of Halloween with some scary outfits.

With all the players suitably exhausted, they and their parents partook of a splendid bring-and-share buffet. This was followed by the parent/player seminar, with presentations from coaches, older players and experienced badminton mums, covering training regimes, diet and competitions. The highlight of the evening was a talk by 21 year-old Epsom born Georgina Bland. She has recently achieved success on the senior circuit and is a member of the Surrey Smashers team in the National Badminton League. Georgina gave a fascinating insight into her move from junior to senior level and our players were all ears to get hints on what they need to do to emulate her achievements. For photos of the event click here and for a report on Georgina’s recent success click here

Our PC players have been travelling to tournaments in the south East and beyond and coming away with a hoard of medals of all hues.
